Controlling Spirit is the pre-quest chain that keys a CL90 character into the Exar Kun heroic on Yavin IV. The frame is Force-attunement: before the Temple of Exar Kun’s seal will recognize a player, the player must prove they can hold a tethered Sith spirit without surrendering to it. Fandom places it alongside The Nightsister Headdress as one of the more involved heroic pre-quests, though shorter in raw step count.

How to start

The chain opens at the Archeological Dig Site near the Temple of Exar Kun on Yavin IV. The first contact is a dig-site researcher and Exar Kun cultist who has been studying the temple from the outside; the cultist hands the player a spirit-tethered focus and warns that whatever is in the temple has been pulling at the excavation crew for months.

Quest steps

The chain is short by heroic-pre-quest standards but heavy on Force-themed dialogue:

  • Take the tethered focus from the cultist at the dig site and walk it through several POIs on Yavin IV — the spirit tests the player’s resolve at each one.
  • Combat encounters scale to the player’s CL but lean on Sith-spirit summons rather than mob fights; expect interrupts and AoE pulses, not packs of trash.
  • Return the focus to the cultist once the spirit has been bound. The cultist confirms the player can hold the focus without falling, then keys the temple seal.

How it unlocks the heroic

Completing Controlling Spirit lets the player descend into the Exar Kun heroic instance through “An Ancient Brazier” interactable at the Archeological Dig Site. Each player in a group must complete the pre-quest separately — the key is per-character, like the Nightsister Key of Exile that gates Axkva Min.

Rewards

The chain’s principal reward is the heroic key itself: access to the Exar Kun instance, where the Exar Kun Token of Heroism and the Two-Handed Fifth Generation Lightsaber rotate through the loot table. The pre-quest itself is not a primary loot source.
